Acidity can certainly be an uncomfortable thing. It causes symptoms like heartburn, nausea, bloating, belching, and even painful ulcers. It results from various factors like a poor diet, genes, and alcohol abuse. One of the most important things to do if you have acidity due to excess acid in your stomach is a diet change. Ayurvedic experts have for a long time recognised the ability of certain foods to reduce acidity, as well as aggravate it. So here’s a list of foods to avoid in acidity, as well as foods to favour.

Foods To Avoid In Acidity

1. Pungent Spices

Pungent spices increase Pitta in the body, so they fall under foods to avoid in acidity. This worsens acidity and significantly aggravate ulcers. So steer clear of pungent foods like chillies, paprika, and black pepper. It is certainly best to eat more mildly flavoured food for the time being. Consider indulging in the goodness of khichdi.

2. Meat

In Ayurveda, meat is a tamasic food. This means that it harms the body and mind. So it’s best avoided on any day. But it’s especially harmful for those with acidity since it causes acid reflux. Avoid beef, fish, and chicken. You can use this time to explore vegan options like tofu.

3. Acidic Beverages

Another tamasic food, alcohol causes more stomach acid to travel up your digestive tract. This worsens the symptoms of acid reflux. Avoid it. Caffeine and soda also add to the severity of acidity.

4. Whole Grains

Whole grains are definitely among the healthiest foods. But they can worsen your pH balance. Grains like brown rice, wheat, and rye tend to aggravate acidity. That’s why those suffering from this problem are generally advised to limit their consumption. Millet, oats, and quinoa are better options. When you recover, go ahead and enjoy the benefits of brown rice.

5. Fatty Food

Fatty food, Ayurvedic experts reckon, makes you more prone to acid reflux. So while you have this problem, avoid fried food, heavy meat, greasy food, processed food, cake, and cookies. Dairy products are also generally considered harmful for those with acidity. So stay away from butter, cheese, and high fat milk. In fact, though avocados are a super food, they are not good right now because of their fat content.

6. Acidic Fruits

It’s important to pick the right fruits when you have acidity. Fruits like oranges, mangoes, peaches, pineapple, and papaya.

What To Eat

Now that we’re done talking about acid reflux foods to avoid, we’ll share with you a list of foods you can freely enjoy.

Most Veggies

Favour veggies like carrots, peas, broccoli, potatoes, and cabbage. Make sure that you don’t eat canned, fried, and creamed vegetables.

Water And Herbal Drinks

Water is extremely healing. Ayurvedic experts advise drinking warm water. It helps the body detox excellently. Enjoy herbal teas like lemon tea. Green tea is great too.

Less Acidic Fruits

Fruits like coconut, kiwi, lemon, bananas, pears, watermelon, and grapes bring about a better pH balance in your belly.
