Sacred Plants Of India: Healing, Holy & Evergreen

As per Indian ideologies, even the plants and trees around us comprise of the five great elements of nature a.k.a. Panchmahabhuta – Water, Earth, Fire, Ether, and Air. Monks believe that these greens are an abode of the deity and therefore call them sacred plants.

What are sacred plants? These are basically those holy plants that have been associated with one or the other Hindu Gods in India. For the same reason, they also help get rid of the negative energy in the surroundings. Over the years, we’ve come to know them as powerful healers.

Sacred Plants Of India

1. Darbha/ Kusha Grass

It is one of the most important items used in Hindu rituals. According to the Vedas, there’s no distinction between the Darbha grass and water since they’re both considered equal. Darbha is a purifier, keeps away harmful radiations and is used for making yagna mats, pitta-pacifying drinks as well as cooling essential oils. Moreover, this sacred plant is Lord Ganesha’s sacred plant too.

2. Lotus

It symbolizes divinity, fortune, virtue, beauty, enlightenment as well as the personification of God. Dwelling in muddy swamps, lotus plant is the one that rises up pure. White lotus is especially considered top-most amongst the other known sacred plants.

3. Tulsi

This is one of the highly positive as well as holy plants in Hinduism. Not only is it auspicious but also amongst the best healing plants. Therefore, tulsi is purifying for your mind, body, and soul. Know more about Tulsi here.

4. Neem

Neem accords holistic health. It’s the embodiment of Goddess Neemari Devi. Neem has a Pitta as well as a Kapha pacifying impact on the body and is amongst the best healing plants known to mankind. Know more about Neem here.

5. Medical Cannabis

According to sacred Hindu texts, cannabis was provided to mankind for attaining liberation and happiness. It relieves anxiety as well as to lose fear. However, with time, it has lost the essence of being medicinal since people use it for unethical purposes.

6. Jasmine

Jasmine is associated with Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Its essential oils, perfumes, and ointments are quite popular. The fragrance promotes feelings of euphoria, confidence as well as positivity. Also, it is Kapha as well as pitta pacifying.

7. Sandalwood

This is amongst the best and long known healing plants. It’s non-toxic, antidepressant, antibacterial, sedative as well as a general health tonic. It’s used in several Hindu rituals and is associated with Lord Dharukavaneswarar.

8. Amla

Indian Gooseberry is Tridosha balancing. It increases Ojas, is rejuvenating and is a general health tonic. All parts of the amla plant are satvik. Know more about Amla here.

9. Champaka

Holy plants like champaka are absolutely divine. You may offer the flowers of this plant to Lord Shiva, Krishna as well as Kamadeva. Having a floral aroma, it’s Kapha as well as Pitta pacifying. It’s also a potent aphrodisiac.

10. Kava

Kava-kava is known for its wisdom imparting qualities. It’s one of those healing plants that provides mental clarity, is rejuvenating and leaves a positive impact on the mind, body, and soul. The kava drink is a powerful health tonic.
