Tonsillitis is the swelling up of tonsils, often as a result of infection in the throat. It brings with it a whole bunch of painful symptoms – even swallowing food hurts! And while anyone can get it, tonsillitis most commonly occurs in children. It is called ‘galaayu’ in Ayurveda. Your doctor may prescribe Ayurvedic medicine for tonsils in the form of herbs that treat the infection, get rid of the inflammation, and boost immunity. In addition, you’ll have to make some changes in your diet and lifestyle to help your body heal. Here are a few remedies Ayurvedic specialists may use to cure tonsillitis.

Ayurvedic Medicine for Tonsils: Herbs and Home Remedies

1. Salt Water

Almost every doctor would agree that salt water is an excellent Ayurvedic medicine for tonsils that are inflamed and infected. And it’s so simple to use!

Just add a pinch of common salt to a cup of water and heat the water until the salt dissolves. Let it cool until it’s lukewarm and then, gargle with it. Do this around 5-6 times a day – beginning in the morning before breakfast and ending after your last meal. This brings instant relief. Just make sure that the water’s not too hot.

2. Agastya Rasayanam

This medicine contains a bunch of herbs like bala, barley and long pepper root. It’s quite a potent remedy, and is prescribed for a wide range of respiratory conditions like asthma and tuberculosis. It also gives a much-needed immunity boost. Agastya Rasayanam works well even in severe cases of tonsillitis, and it makes sure that the condition doesn’t reoccur – so, patients often continue taking it for many months.

The general dosage is a teaspoon along with honey. But please consult your doctor before taking it, since it must suit your body without producing side effects.

3. Chamomile, Honey and Lime

These two are great tonsillitis home remedies. Chamomile tea is popular around the world for its relaxing effects, both on the body and mind. And honey is one of the ultimate Ayurvedic remedies for cough and cold, thanks to its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

So, add 2 teaspoons of chamomile to a cup of water and bring it to a boil for a few minutes. Pour it out into a cup and add a teaspoon of honey. Then, squeeze half a lemon into it – that’ll further boost this medicine’s potency. Drink a few cups a day. The inflammation and infection will subside, and the stress from the pain will fade too.

4. Fenugreek Seeds

Fenugreek seeds have pretty powerful medicinal properties. They fight bacterial and viral infections, reduce inflammation, help the body heal from fevers, and relieve pain too. Fenugreek tea is quite soothing for the senses. So, it’s a valued Ayurvedic medicine for throat infection.

Just add around 3 teaspoons of the seeds to a litre of water. Bring it to a boil until the water reduces to half its quantity. Then, strain the water and when it’s lukewarm, gargle with it.

Fenugreek has a variety of other health benefits as well.

In Closing…

Apart from using remedies like these, make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day. And importantly, avoid fried, sour, spicy and acidic food. Remember to rest your throat and get enough sleep – it’s utmost important for healing!
