Beriberi disease or a thiamine deficiency is a life-threatening condition that majorly affects your circulatory as well as nervous systems. Essentially, it’s a lack of vitamin B1 in the body. There are two types of beriberi disease: Wet as well as dry. While the wet beriberi symptoms damage the circulatory system and ultimately weaken the heart, dry beriberi symptoms attack your nervous system, leading to muscular paralysis. Therefore, treatment is usually possible with thiamine drugs, but one may also seek herbal as well as natural remedies.

 What Are Beriberi Causes?

  • Lack of vitamin B1 or thiamine deficiency
  • Alcohol abuse

 What Are The Beriberi Symptoms?

  • Swollen lower legs
  • Shortness of breath
  • Increased heart rate
  • Paralysis
  • Vomiting
  • Involuntary eye movements
  • Mental confusion

 Beriberi Treatment

 1. Brahmi Boosts Immunity.

Since brahmi is an anti-allergic herb, its usage can heal swelling as well as rashes on the body. Therefore, take one teaspoon of brahmi powder with water after every meal. Repeat till beriberi symptoms subside.

2. Green Tea Fights Off Free Radicals.

Green tea has anti-inflammatory as well as antibacterial properties. It helps remove toxins from the body. So, boil one teaspoon of green tea leaves in a cup of water. Steep for about 5 minutes. Strain and drink warm twice daily.

3. Spirulina Overcomes Thiamine Deficiency.

The blue-green algae spirulina is highly abundant in minerals as well as vitamins. Its proper dosage can be helpful in curing thiamine deficiency that causes the beriberi disease. Take 1-2g of spirulina for beriberi treatment.

4. Indian Gooseberry Provides Vitamin C.

Since amla or Indian gooseberry is enriched with vitamin C, it’s great for digestion as well as skin enhancement. Regular consumption of vitamin C rich foods helps alleviate thiamine deficiency. So, dry some amla fruit and grind it into a fine powder. Have one teaspoon of the powder with honey each day to get rid of the beriberi disease.

5. Release Stress With Withania Somnifera.

Ashwagandha or withania somnifera is a neuroprotective herb. It improves neuroendocrine functions as well as helps release stress. Therefore, take a teaspoon of dried ashwagandha powder with a glass warm milk or ghee once every day to overcome B1 deficiency a.k.a thiamine deficiency.

6. Drink Rice Bran For Thiamine Deficiency.

Since beriberi is caused by vitamin B1 deficiency, brown rice – especially the unpolished variety – is said to be beneficial. Therefore, take one cup of unpolished brown rice and boil it in 1l water until it reduces to one cup. Strain the water and allow it to reach room temperature. Drink this water every day and overcome B1 deficiency.
