Health Benefits of Chenopodium Leaves (Bathua) – A Green Blessing

Loaded with tremendous health benefits, lamb’s quarters has medicinal uses along with being a winter superfood. Chenopodium Album (scientific name) is also commonly called as Bathua leaves in Hindi and lamb’s quarters in English. This medicinal plant has a pretty undeserved status despite its wondrous and nutritious profile. It is rich in minerals and has an earthy taste that’s also salty like spinach. People who are more inclined towards enjoying darker greens like spinach and kale will appreciate lamb’s quarters. But, when it comes to lamb’s quarters health benefits, one cannot deny the fact that it’s above all!

Chenopodium (Lamb’s Quarters) Nutrition Facts

Chenopodium leaves or lamb’s quarters is a rich source of vitamin A, B, and C along with essential minerals like iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, manganese, sodium, and zinc. Every 100 grams of raw Chenopodium leaves contain about 7 grams of carbohydrate, 4 grams of proteins and 4 grams of fibre.

Benefits of Chenopodium Leaves

1. Makes A Heavenly Meal

When consumed with curd or buttermilk, lamb’s quarters becomes easily digestible. You can also prepare millet flour or cornmeal flatbreads with bathua and top them up with jaggery and white butter to make a delicious meal.

2. It’s For Everyone!

The moment we fall sick, doctors prescribe tonics and pills. However, the solution lies in our kitchens. From wrestlers to pregnant women, from kids to elderly, bathua leaves benefit everyone. Chenopodium leaves contain all the necessary nutrients that build our health.

3. Kidney

Bathua helps prevent kidney stones, but in case you have them, here’s the solution. Drink the juice of raw bathua leaves mixed with sugar to effectively dissolve the stones. Regular consumption will easily help you get rid of this issue.

4. Digestion

Chenopodium leaves strengthen your digestive system and prevent fatty liver. So, it must be cooked with least amount of spices. However, black salt and desi ghee (clarified butter) can be used. Avoid mixing white salt. You can also boil the leaves in water for drinking like a clear soup or simply prepare a delicious variant of yoghurt seasoned with raw chenopodium leaves.

5. Constipation

Bathua or chenopodium leaves properly clear your stomach to keep you disease-free. So, whenever possible, consume bathua the way you want.

6. Hair Care

Lamb’s quarters’ health benefits also include hair care. Indian Gooseberry (Amla) is considered best when it comes to replenishing your hair but chenopodium leaves are no less. It helps you retain your original hair colour. And the abundant nutrients make it an efficient and natural hair wash.

7. Menstruation

If you are having irregular periods, boil 2 tsp of bathua seeds for about 10 minutes in a glass of water, sieve the liquid and drink it. You can also prepare a decoction of 30 grams chenopodium leaves with some dried ginger and water to consume twice a day. Internal complications clear without further delay.

8. Intestinal Parasites

What are lamb’s quarters medicinal uses? It helps eliminate intestinal worms. Prepare a 20-30 ml juice of chenopodium leaves and drink for about 15 days to get relief.

9. Urinary Infections

Boil half a kg Bathua leaves in three glasses of water. Cool the liquid; add lemon, black salt and drink it. This effectively cures the infection and reduces internal swelling.

10. Dental Health

Chew some raw chenopodium leaves or seeds to maintain better oral hygiene. It gets rid of bad breath, one of the most annoying problems.

This one doesn’t concern your health but is a mind-blowing piece of information. In the very beginning, chenopodium leaves were used to obtain green colour for painting the house walls! Interesting, isn’t it?
