Is It Bad To Eat Before Bed?

Ayurveda and medical science both have various reasons to disapprove of eating at night. Ayurveda believes that eating before bed confuses the internal clock of the body.

So, What Is The Right Routine?

According to Ayurveda, the right time to eat dinner is before 8 pm. It also suggests consuming a heavy breakfast, moderate lunch, and a dainty supper for maintaining optimal health. So, take a nutritious diet in all three meals and do not skip either of them.

Dangers Of Eating Before Bed

1. It Causes Weight Gain.

The prospects of storing fat are high during the night. Going to bed right after eating at night is a poor habit. You do not lose the calories ingested and hence, start gaining weight.

2. The Risk Of Heart Diseases Rise.

With an increased waistline comes increased medical bills. Eating before bed leads to increased cholesterol especially if your plate is filled with the wrong items. LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) affects the functioning of your heart and may eventually result in a heart attack.

3. Late-Night Dinner Affects Concentration.

Is it bad to eat before bed? Studies have shown that people who eat before bed have decreased concentration levels. It also leads to weak memory. However, certain studies conclude that it’s okay to eat at night. But, according to Ayurveda a heavy dinner post 8 pm leads to several problems. So, you may have to eat considering your body type or health conditions which is why what you eat is literally the answer also how well you digest that.

4. Eating Before Bed Aggravates Vata & Kapha.

Eating late-night dinner causes an imbalance in the Doshas. Ayurveda says that eating before bed increases Vata as well as Kapha leading to phlegm. Cough, cold, and difficulty in breathing are some symptoms of increased phlegm.

5. Eating At Night Disturbs Your Sleep.

If your sleeping pattern isn’t right, the reason could be having dinner late at night. Some researchers have also linked late-night dinner with nightmares as well as disturbed sleep patterns due to indigestion, heartburn, etc.

6. Late-Night Dinner Causes Bad Breath.

In case you have to have late-night dinner and you don’t brush thereafter, it can cause bad breath. The germs buildup plaque and a coating on the tongue which leads to foul smell.

7. Laziness Clouds In The Morning.

Eating at night is known to lower the metabolic rate in the body. Slow metabolism leads to laziness and decreased energy levels throughout the day.

How To Stop Eating At Night?

Nothing’s going to happen overnight. Determination will help you develop the right lifestyle. So, here’s how to stop eating at night:

  • Have your dinner around 7-8 pm. Gradually, you’ll get into the habit.
  • Plan your meals according to the day.
  • Track your daily routine.
  • Understand if it’s physical or emotional hunger.
  • Try buying less junk food.
  • Drink a glass of water when you feel hungry at night.
