Diet plays a very important role in regulating all the functions of your body. When you maintain regular intake of all the essential nutrients, it keeps you active and going. But considering the habits and lifestyle of today, building up a strong immune system gets tough. Vitamin A deficiency is a common problem affecting people worldwide. But, we don’t really pay attention to the symptoms of vitamin A deficiency which spells a trouble in the long run. So, these are some of the signs you must not ignore!

Vitamin A Deficiency Symptoms

1. Skin Irritation

Skin irritations are very common in case of vitamin A deficiency. Lack of it can start to deteriorate the skin health and make it lose its lustre. It can also lead to itching, dryness, and breakouts. Mouth sores, acne, bumpy skin, and cracked lips are some of the other signs that indicate a shortage.

2. Lowering Energy Levels

You start feeling depressed and tired throughout the day when there is lack of vitamin A. Your body isn’t supplied with the required nutrients especially vitamin A, B, and, D…and as a result, you feel low on energy.

3. Night Blindness

One of the most common signs of vitamin A deficiency is night blindness. Rhodopsin, a light-sensitive protein that’s present in the eyes gets faulty and impairs the vision. You might find it difficult to drive at night. Even making your way to the other room at night is a big task. Children can get apprehensive about moving around at night. And that’s how you can observe night blindness and a lack of vitamin A.

4. Dry Eyes

Eye problems are amongst the primary obstacles triggered by vitamin A deficiency. Acute dryness results from the inability of your eyes to stay moist. Your eyelids stop functioning the way they should. Eyes can feel sore and you also notice lesser tears.

5. Frequent Infections

Vitamin A deficiency makes you prone to contracting more and more infections. Lack of it weakens your immune system which can cause damage to the entire body. It can lead to vaginal, gastrointestinal as well as respiratory tract infections. And you are also vulnerable to skin, stomach and urinary tract illnesses.

6. Tingling Sensations In The Feet

One of the most ignored symptoms of vitamin A deficiency is problems with your nervous system. Your feet and hands feel numb and you also experience tingling sensations. This is usually accompanied by lack of concentration, mood swings as well as muscular cramping, particularly in the calves.

How To Curb Vitamin A Deficiency?

Increase your intake of boiled spinach, carrots, broccoli, black-eyed peas, baked sweet potatoes, papaya, tomatoes, mango, apricots, and lettuce. You can also take supplements with the guidance of a doctor.
