Postpartum depression a.k.a. postnatal depression is a feeling of dislike as well as discontent towards one’s baby after pregnancy. New mothers usually experience baby blues after 4 to 5 days of birth. However, this duration is subjective to the psyche of the mother. Postnatal depression results from psychological, social as well as biological factors. A mother lacking emotional support, having previous episodes of depression and unrealistic expectations is more likely to suffer from the postpartum depression symptoms. This eventually puts both the baby as well as the mother’s well-being at risk.

What Causes Postpartum Depression?

  • Past episodes of depression
  • Inability to adjust to new responsibilities
  • Societal pressure as well as expectations
  • Hormonal changes
  • Depression during pregnancy
  • Marital issues

What Are The Postpartum Depression Symptoms?

  • Crying
  • Insomnia
  • Low spirit
  • Hopelessness as well as helplessness
  • Gloominess and sadness
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Irritability
  • Lack of motivation to work

Postpartum Depression Treatment

1. Flaxseeds Help Treat Depression.

A lot of studies have pointed out the effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acids in fighting off depression. Flaxseeds are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and they help nourish the mind as well as body. Taking just one teaspoon of flaxseeds with water twice daily helps ease the condition.

2. Calm Your Mind With Chamomile Tea.

Chamomile flowers are quite therapeutic in nature. The aroma of the flowers itself can relax the nerves. Chamomile also has anti-inflammatory properties that can soothe the body. So, add some dry chamomile flowers in one cup of water. Steep the tea for 5 minutes. Strain and drink twice every day.

3. Treat Insomnia With Skullcap Herb.

It’s quite common for a woman dealing with postpartum depression to lose sleep. Therefore, taking skullcap in the form of tea helps induce a better sleep pattern and keep off any stress. Add one teaspoon of skullcap powder in a cup of water. Boil it for about 5 minutes and strain. Drink before sleeping at night to alleviate the other postpartum depression symptoms.

4. Try St. John Wort To Cheer Your Mood.

St. John wort is very beneficial in fighting off the mood swings. It acts as an antidepressant and also helps relieve anxiety. So, take about 300 mg of St. John wart’s powder thrice every day and ease off postnatal depression.

5. Go For A Full Body Massage.

Essential oils like clary sage, rosemary as well as sandalwood have a healing aroma. Use either of the oils mixed with a carrier oil like coconut oil for massaging the body or the head. It will regulate blood circulation and comfort the signs of depression. A few drops of any of these oils can also be added to the bathing water for better results.
