We have all heard about enormous health benefits of Hing or asafoetida. Asafoetida is also considered to be an Ayurvedic super food. But, what you may have never heard are some of the Asafoetida side effects. When used as a herbal treatment, hing can cure several bodily ailments, but an excessive use can lead to critical problems.

Asafoetida Uses And Side Effects

Asafoetida has a pungent and strong fragrance. Only a pinch of it can add significant flavor to all your dishes. Despite several health benefits, the side effects must not be neglected.

Under normal conditions, intake of asafoetida leaves no side effects. However, anything that’s used in an undesirable limit can produce ill effects. Everyday dietary dosage is recommended to be around 5 mg to 30 mg. However, in case of any therapeutic usage, maximum can only be upto 250 mg per day.

Prolonged usage of asafoetida in high amounts can lead to a burning sensation while urination, cause throat infections, make it difficult to concentrate and also prove to be toxic for the livestock. In women, excess of hing can easily mess up menstruation cycles.

Asafoetida Side Effects

1. It Can Be A Skin Irritant

Excessive usage of hing results in skin rashes, redness, tingling sensation as well as scratching. In case you have a sensitive skin, hing or asafoetida side effects can be very dangerous. Hence, if the problem persists, it is advisable to see a doctor as soon as possible.

2. Causes Swelling On Your Lips

Some people may experience an abnormal amount of puffiness in their lips. Under critical conditions, this puffiness may also develop in the areas of throat and face. If the situation persists even after a few hours, seek medical help immediately.

3. Creates Stomach Related Disorders

Gas and burning sensation along with vomiting are a few major asafoetida side effects. Frequently having loose stool is another negative effect that simply adds on to the problems. Abdominal gas results in constant belching or burping along with other such discomforts.

4. Throws Blood Pressure Out Of Control

People who are already facing the problems related to hypertension or hypotension should avoid any amount of hing so as to remain healthy and avoid the possible dangers.

5. Unsafe During Pregnancy And Nursing

Pregnant women and nursing mothers must avoid the consumption of asafoetida. Hing or asafoetida side effects include several types of blood disorders along with the chances of having a miscarriage. Thus, like any other spice, asafoetida too has side effects.
