Whether you live in a tropical region where the summer means soaring temperatures, or in a cold country where it’s the nicest time of the year…you could certainly benefit from summer health tips. Summer is dominated by the Pitta dosha. This is one of the three biological energies in Ayurveda. Pitta is hot, dry, fast-moving, and light. During the summer, Pitta tends to get aggravated rather easily. This causes imbalances, especially in people who are already ruled by this dosha. Problems like high BP, fatigue, dehydration, and stomach ulcers are common. But there’s good news too! There are tons of Ayurvedic summer tips that help you reduce Pitta. Here are the top summer health tips to keep you fit and fresh.

6 Ayurvedic Summer Health Tips

1. Don’t Ignore Headaches.

This is one of the most important summer tips. Summer headaches are extremely common. But if your headaches are severe and frequent, you body’s telling you that you need to do something differently. Perhaps your body is dehydrated – which means you should immediately start drinking more water. Or are you partying too hard? Working too much? Not resting during the afternoon? Limit Sun exposure, and watch your stress levels too. Here are some excellent Ayurvedic remedies for summer headaches.

2. Refresh Your Senses With Aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is an incredibly powerful technique to combat imbalance in the body and mind. As you would expect, the best aromatherapy essential oils for the summer are cooling, soothing, and energising. Here are the best options to try:

  • Peppermint
  • Eucalyptus
  • Sandalwood
  • Lavender
  • Spearmint
  • Orange
  • Lemon
  • Rosemary
  • Rose

3. Chill Out With Pranayama.

This is a breathing technique practised in yoga for thousands of years. It’s a wonderful way to cool down – both mentally and physically. Here are the best Pranayamas for the summer:

  • Shitali Pranayama
  • Shitkari Pranayama
  • Anulom Vilom
  • Chandra Bhedan

4. Follow A Summer Diet

This one’s a no-brainer! Ayurveda always encourages tweaking your diet according to the seasons. What to include in your summer diet? Food that is not only cooling, but also easy to digest, fresh, and hydrating.

So, eat loads of:

  • Watermelon
  • Tomato
  • Cucumber
  • Zucchini
  • Fresh fruit juices
  • Oranges
  • Yoghurt
  • Leafy greens
  • Blackberries
  • Apples
  • Green tea
  • Mint
  • Rosemary
  • Lemon

On the other hand, keep these foods out of your summer diet:

  • Ice
  • Alcohol
  • Fried food
  • Red meat
  • Caffeine
  • Carbonates beverages
  • Excess white sugar
  • Processed food

5. Protect Your Skin.

One of the most ignored summer safety tips is skin protection. Your skin is sensitive, and can get quite damaged from exposure to the Sun over the years. Lack of protection from the Sun can cause spotting, premature ageing, burning, as well as uneven skin. So, don’t leave home without applying sunscreen and cover your skin from the scorching hot Sun! In case of sunburned skin, try these remedies.

6. Don’t Forget To Relax.

Last on our list of summer tips is to simply chill out! During the Pitta season, it’s easy to strain your body and stress your mind. Now that you know this, watch out for this tendency and take enough time to relax. This is great for pacifying the Pitta dosha. Go on a swim, walk in nature, take a holiday, and work moderately. As per Ayurveda, it’s good to take short naps in the afternoon during the summers.
