One of the potent antioxidants, vitamin C is known to play a vital role in ensuring your overall well-being. However, with an imbalanced lifestyle and eating habits, lack of this nutrient in the body isn’t uncommon. Here are 10 vitamin C deficiency symptoms you must be aware of, before assuming it to be something else!

Vitamin C Deficiency Symptoms

1. Iron Deficiency

It is anemia that’s marked by a deficiency of iron in the body which results from low vitamin C intake. Overall, it leads to malabsorption of iron from food and causes excessive bleeding, fatigue, paleness, troubles breathing, and dry skin or hair.

2. Damaged Hair

Vitamin C deficiency symptoms may include a defective protein structure of your hair follicles. Corkscrew-shaped hair is one of the obvious signs of the lack. Your hair also become brittle, lose its luster, result in split ends and may also easily fall out!

3. Skin Cells Deteriorate

Vitamin C plays a major role in the production of collagen that regulates the health of your connective tissues (hair, skin, bones, joints, and blood vessels). However, when your daily requirement of vitamin C isn’t met, it can lead to dry, bumpy, flaky and wrinkled skin. Adequate amounts keep the skin soft and rejuvenated, whereas lack of it can reduce the suppleness.

4. Swollen Gums

Your gums are also partially made up of collagen to make them sensitive when the vitamin C content in your body drops. They tend to bleed more, the wound healing ability diminishes and swelling too results from inflammation.

5. Nose Bleeding

Vitamin C deficiency symptoms may include frequent nose bleeding due to blood vessels that rupture easily. Since collagen is responsible to strengthen them, having a low vitamin C may become a significant reason for bleeding nose.

6. Slow Wound Healing Ability

Remember, your body’s healing mechanism is dependent on this essential vitamin. But, when the amounts are much lower, your body’s healing response gets pretty slow. So, vitamin C deficiency symptoms cause slower healing and longer bleeding.

7. Weight Gain

When the levels are sufficient, vitamin C helps regulate fat cells and decrease inflammation. There’s an important link between vitamin C deficiency and unexplained weight gain, especially in the stomach area.

8. Frequently Contracting Infections

Vitamin C encourages and restores the production of white blood cells that strengthen your body’s resistance. When you frequently suffer from seasonal infections, it’s a sign of weakened immunity. So, meet your daily requirement of vitamin C and prevent the frequent attack of diseases.

9. Spoon-Shaped Fingernails

Vitamin C deficiency symptoms result in nails that look concave shaped, thin and brittle. Some red spots and vertical lines may also appear, due to weak blood vessels that easily rupture in the nail bed.

10. Weaker Bones And Joints

Since the cartilage present in your bones and joints majorly comprises of vitamin C, inadequate levels can result in unbearable pain, swelling, and inflammation. But, consuming a satisfactory amount maintains your bone health and also prevents the symptoms of osteoporosis or fracture.
