What is cataplexy? Essentially, it’s a loss of control over the body muscles. The condition occurs when the patient experiences strong as well as extreme emotions. Usually, laughter and joy trigger the cataplexy symptoms. It involves facial twitching, weakness as well as severe trembling. The cases of cataplexy occurring as a singular disease are rare. Therefore, it is often accompanied as an indication of narcolepsy or some other autoimmune disorder. Ayurveda does not offer a definite cataplexy treatment. But, it assists in the reduction of potential triggers.

What Is Cataplexy?

Cataplexy is a brain disorder causing sudden as well as temporary loss of voluntary muscle control. The triggers are strong emotions like anger, laughter, joy, or depression. Cataplexy is also a narcolepsy symptom developed through a defect in the sleep cycle.

What Causes Cataplexy?

The exact causes of cataplexy are unknown, however, it occurs during REM sleep. The loss of hypocretin (a neurotransmitter) is said to be the major reason for cataplexy. Hypocretin is responsible for wakefulness in the sleep-wake cycle.

What Are Cataplexy Symptoms?

  • Facial twitching/flickering/ grimacing
  • Unusual tongue movement
  • Tremors in the jaw
  • Trembling knees
  • Eyelids dropping
  • Difficulty in speech
  • Collapsing or inability to move

Cataplexy Treatment

1. Amala Strengthens Muscles.

Cataplexy treatment is possible with Indian gooseberry. Ayurveda considers Amla as an immune builder and muscle control tonic. So, blend 3-4 amla fruits to extract the juice. Drink a cup of juice thrice daily to relieve any associated cataplexy symptoms.

2. Ashwagandha Enhances Neurological Health.

Since ashwagandha is a brain tonic, it is a natural adaptogen. The herb helps improve stress endurance as well as neurological transmission in the brain. Therefore, take 500mg of ashwagandha powder with a glass of warm milk. Drink twice every day for better results.

3.  Siberian Ginseng Builds Up Strength.

Since Eleuthero or Siberian ginseng is a potent health tonic, it boosts muscular control as well as maintains physical-mental coordination. So, boil a teaspoon of Siberian ginseng powder in a cup of water. Steep the tea for 5 minutes, and then strain. Drink thrice daily for quick stress reduction.

4. Astragalus Increases Muscles Power.

Cataplexy symptoms include twitching as well as trembling knees. Therefore, astragalus is beneficial for bone as well as muscle strength. So, grind some astragalus roots and boil a teaspoon of the powder in one cup of water. Steep the decoction for 5-10 minutes and drink every day.

5. Maca Supports Stress Tolerance.

What causes cataplexy? Stress and anxiety are the major triggers. Therefore, the maca herb is beneficial. It contains adaptogens to help increase muscular stamina as well as the ability to cope with stress. So, take 1.5g of dried maca root twice a day for cataplexy symptoms treatment.
