Gilbert’s syndrome is known as constitutional hepatic dysfunction and familial nonhemolytic jaundice. It occurs when bilirubin levels increase in the body. A majority of Gilbert’s syndrome symptoms are similar to that of jaundice. Consuming alcohol as well as smoking worsens your condition. So, following a healthy Gilbert’s syndrome diet is the best treatment.

What Causes Gilbert’s Syndrome?

Gilbert’s syndrome occurs when the liver is not able to process bilirubin, which is a yellow tinted waste product produced after the breakdown of the red blood cells. Genes play a major role in the development of a disease. And, a person who inherits the UGT1A1 mutated gene has high bilirubin levels.

What Are The Gilbert’s Syndrome Symptoms?

  • Symptoms of jaundice like paleness and yellow eyes
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal discomfort
  • Fatigue

Gilbert’s Syndrome Diet & Treatment

1. Drink Green Tea.

Green tea helps in increasing fat levels in the liver. Therefore, heat a cup of water in a pan. Add a teaspoon of green tea and cover it. Strain after 5 minutes and drink twice or thrice daily.

2. Try Milk Thistle Decoction.

Milk thistle is detoxifying. It protects the liver from damage. So, boil a cup of milk thistle in a liter of water. Steep it for an hour and take about 150ml of the decoction twice every day. Store the rest for further use.

3. Dandelion Tea Is Useful.

Dandelion is a potent diuretic that’s beneficial for liver diseases. Thus, steep half a teaspoon of dandelion powder in two cups of water for 15 minutes. Drink it three times a day to cure Gilbert’s syndrome symptoms.

4. Burdock Root Tea Reduces The Discomforts.

Burdock herb is a detoxifier as well as blood purifier. So, you can use it to bring down the bilirubin levels. In a cup of hot water, add a teaspoon of burdock root powder and let it steep for 10 minutes. Strain the tea and drink it thrice every day.

5. Ginger Relieves Nausea.

Gilbert’s syndrome symptoms include nausea as well as vomiting. Ginger helps relieve nausea and aid better digestion. So, crush a piece of ginger and extract one teaspoon of its juice. Mix it in a teaspoon of carrot juice or consume it with a teaspoon of honey to relieve the symptoms.

6. Eat Probiotic Foods.

Probiotic foods enhance gut health and help fix liver damage. Therefore, they are essential for the treatment of Gilbert’s syndrome symptoms. Add foods like tempeh, kefir, sauerkraut, yogurt, apple cider vinegar, and kimchi to your Gilbert’s syndrome diet.

7. Focus On Cruciferous Vegetables.

Vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower, radish, and broccoli protect the liver from cirrhosis. These foods also assist in balancing the bilirubin levels.
