With our on-the-go lifestyle, the feet are the most neglected part of the human body. No matter how bad they get, we don’t really have much time for them. However, prolonged swelling can be dangerous and that excessive accumulation of fluids in a particular part of your body can also be painful. But, with the right treatment and appropriate home remedies for swollen feet (edema), you can instantly relax your tootsies.

What Causes Swollen Feet?

Heart problems, liver or kidney issues, diabetes, pregnancy, anemia, improper diet, prolonged fasting or leading a sedentary lifestyle onsets the problem of edema. And it is due to these causative agents that create an imbalance in your Vata, Pitta and Kapha doshas. Toxins accumulate in your veins to weaken your blood circulation and cause problems in your skin and muscles. All of this ultimately results in swollen feet.

Home Remedies For Swollen Feet

1. Dietary Precautions

One of the best home remedies for swollen feet is to follow an appropriate diet. Eat barley, garlic, gooseberry, drumsticks, honey, green gram, and tender reddish. Avoid excessive consumption of oily, spicy and dry foods along with sour substances like curd, and salty edibles. A magnesium deficiency can also contribute to swelling in your feet. So, get your magnesium intake right and combat the problem. Also, make sure that you are drinking enough water every day which will drive out more toxins and rebalance the fluid levels in your body.

2. Hot And Cold Water Therapy

This is also called as contrast hydrotherapy which is a highly effective swollen feet treatment. Get two different tubs of water – one warm and the other cold. For about 3-4 minutes, soak your feet in the warm water and immediately switch over to cold water for about a minute. Continue doing this for 20 minutes and carry out with this therapy twice daily till you get relief.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

The high potassium content present in ACV helps reduce water retention in your feet which might eventually cause swelling. Soak a towel in the solution of raw ACV and an equal amount of water. Squeeze out the excess and wrap the towel around your feet for 10 minutes daily. This will help reduce the swelling within few days.

4. Coriander Water

One of the most popular and effective home remedies for swollen feet is the use of coriander seeds. It improves your blood circulation and also reduces the inflammation. Boil in a cup of water around 2-3 teaspoon of coriander seeds till the solution reduces to half. Strain and drink after it cools slightly and repeat twice every day as an effective swollen feet treatment.

5. Essential Oil Soak

Essential oils work as relaxants and the aroma calms your mind. This can provide immense relief from the symptoms of swollen feet. So, pour in a few drops of lemon, eucalyptus, peppermint and lavender essential oil in half a bucket of warm water to soak your feet for about 15 minutes. You can also mix ginger essential oil with some jojoba, coconut or olive oil and soak your feet for 10 minutes. Pat dry after the former remedy but leave the oil on in the latter one.
