Summer fatigue is real. When it starts getting hotter, many temperature-regulating processes get kick-started in the body. A lot of energy gets used up as the body adjusts to the environment. This makes many people feel tired, sleepy, sluggish, and irritable during the summer. If that sounds like you, worry not. Try these Ayurvedic tips to beat summer fatigue.

Summer Fatigue: How To Stop Being So Tired From Heat

1. Drink, Drink, Drink.

The most obvious solution for hot weather fatigue is proper hydration. Most of us don’t drink enough water all through the year, but the effects of this are most clearly felt during the summer. Avoid diuretics like caffeine and keep sipping on slightly cool water during the day. Enjoy plenty of fruit juices, herbal teas, soups, and coconut water.

2. Spritz Your Face With Rose Water.

An excellent Ayurvedic remedy for summer fatigue is some refreshing rose water. Rose is a Pitta-pacifying herb that enlivens the senses instantly. So when you wake up in the morning or during your afternoon slumps, simply spritz or splash your face with cool rose water.

3. Eat Cooling Foods.

You can significantly reduce hot weather fatigue with the cooling summer foods. Since they keep you naturally cool, and your body doesn’t have to use up all that energy adjusting to the outside temperature.

Eat more of:

  • Yogurt, buttermilk, and other milk products
  • All leafy greens
  • Coconut
  • Water-rich veggies like cucumber and zucchini
  • Sweet fruits like watermelon and berries
  • Cooling herbs like fennel, coriander, parsley, dill, and mint
  • Rice
  • Cooling cooking oils like coconut oil and sunflower oil

On the other hand, avoid excess oil, hot beverages, spicy food, alcohol, and caffeine.

4. Practise Left Nostril Breathing.

Did you know that breathing in through your left nostril helps cool down the body? Every day, practise Chandra Bhedana Pranayama (Left Nostril Breathing) for about ten minutes. Also, sleep on your right side to open your left nostril. This will promote more restful sleep.

5. Moisturise Your Skin With Coconut Oil.

What has moisturisation got to do with fatigue, you ask? Well, your skin is an organ and dry skin means your body has to work to fix the dehydration. Dry skin is also more prone to irritation, flaking, and inflammation. Coconut oil has cooling, hydrating, and Pitta-pacifying properties. So, moisturise your skin with coconut oil and you’ll be less tired from heat. You can also use neem oil if you experience redness and rashes on your skin.

6. Wear The Correct Clothing.

Feeling tired from heat? Make sure you’re dressing in a way that helps your body breathe while at the same time preventing excess skin exposure to the harsh sunlight. Wear loose-fitting clothes made with natural breathable fabrics such as cotton. Favour light and cool colours. You’ll feel cooler as well as calmer.

7. Enjoy Pleasant Fragrances.

Fragrance is a powerful thing that influences brain and hormone activity. Cooling, pleasant, and uplifting fragrances can help beat hot weather fatigue. Get yourself an aromatherapy diffuser and try oils such as that of:

  • Lavender
  • Rose
  • Sandalwood
  • Frankincense
  • Citrus
  • Lemon balm
  • Lilac
  • Tea tree
  • Spearmint
  • Lemongrass
