Digestive herbs and spices should be a part of everybody’s diet. Because good digestion lies at the heart of good health. Without it, how would your body properly absorb nutrients properly from your food? And without sufficient nutrition, how would your organs function well and immune system stay strong? Not just that – bad digestion leads to accumulation of toxins or ‘ama’ in the body, which throws your doshas off balance and leads to countless health problems. So go ahead, include these digestive herbs and spices in your daily diet!

Digestive Herbs And Spices That Are Already In Your Kitchen

1. Ginger – An Age Old Digestion Aid

Ayurvedic experts almost always recommend ginger for digestion. With its warming properties, this powerful herb strengthens the agni (digestive fire). It stimulates appetite as well as the production of digestive juices. It’s also great for heartburn and nausea. Just eat it in moderation if you’re a Pitta type.

2. Peppermint – Wonderfully Soothing

One of the loveliest Ayurvedic herbs for digestion problems, peppermint has been found to soothe upset stomachs and help with IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). If you feel full and uneasy after a meal, drink a cup of warm peppermint tea. But some studies have found that it may worsen heartburn, so exercise caution!

3. Turmeric – An Ayurvedic Super Spice

Turmeric is among the Ayurvedic herbs for digestion problems that have been used for hundreds of years. It relaxes the muscles in the digestive system, promotes healthier gut flora, and fights infection. It also supports better liver function. And the curcuma present in turmeric reduces inflammation. An all-rounder herb indeed!

4. Fennel – A Powerful Digestion-Booster

Fennel or ‘saunf’ is one of the best spices for colon health. If you’ve eaten a heavy meal and are feeling funny in your tummy, just chew a teaspoon of fennel seeds. Or brew a tea with it. In a short while, you’ll feel the gas, bloating, and burning subside. A highly valued digestive spice in Ayurveda.

5. Carom Seeds – A Source Of Healing Thymol

Also called ‘‘ajwain’ in India, carom seeds contain thymol. Thymol helps your body secrete digestive juices, thus supporting proper absorption of nutrients. Carom seeds are an effective remedy for acidity. You can boil a tablespoon in 1.5 cups of water until it reduces to a cup. Then, drink warm.

6. Cinnamon – Fragrant And Flavourful

Cinnamon is also among the Ayurvedic spices that help constipation. Being sweet and warming, it promotes a healthy digestive fire and helps treat the ill effects of Vata on the colon. Since it is antibacterial, it fights infections in the digestive tract. Simply sprinkle it into your food or brew an aromatic tea with it.

7. Asafoetida – Extremely Effective

Next on the list of digestive herbs and spices is not the best smelling – but immensely effective. Also called ‘hing’ in India, asafoetida improves digestion in numerous ways. It boosts bile production, gets rid of excess gas, reduces bloating, treats constipation, and also improves appetite.

8. Cardamom – A Must-Have Herb

One of the most delicious and fragrant Ayurvedic herbs for digestion problems, cardamom is a must-have in your kitchen. Its aroma stimulates your taste buds. Its warmth kindles your digestive fire. And its nutrients tackle issues like constipation, heartburn, and gas.
